Ribbon House (2018)
Ribbon House was a site-specific installation built in the Wyatt gallery of Museum of Contemporary Art Arlington (Arlington, VA). Rather than using traditional hardware, fasteners, or glue, the structure is held together entirely by ribbons and beads--objects typically understood to be decorative, gendered objects associated with childhood. Ribbon House is about the size of a small shed and has a low doorway, but the interior of the structure is intersected with scrap wood, making the structure less practical for storage but more visually interesting as a site for imagining potential interiors. While ribbons and beads are not generally considered a 'strong' material, the structure is extremely sturdy. Cotton and plastic ribbons are wrapped and woven through the scrap wood to bind them together, and knotted with beads at each end like anchors. This installation was included in a two-person exhibition titled Within/Between at MoCA Arlington (Arlington, VA) in 2018.
