About this piece:

The reference image I used for this painting came from a series of photos that I took on in the days just before my spine surgery. Knowing the surgery would change my physical body’s structure and alter my mobility permanently, I began recording myself in poses that I knew I would never be able to re-create post-op.

 

For this reference image, I actually had a photographer capture some of these movements in an environment that was covered in black fabric, which makes the pose and lighting more dramatic. When I first returned to painting (after my practice had been focused on fiber-based installations and embroidery for many years) these figurative paintings were an exciting way to study how emotion can be conveyed through the body.
