About this piece:

This painting is a self-portrait that combines multiple moments in time, set within the bathroom of my childhood home where I recovered from spine surgery as an adult. Ever since high school, I have engaged in making self-portraits when going through periods of personal or emotional transitions. My spine surgery in 2020 presented a new kind of transition that was simultaneously physical, emotional, and spiritual.

In the first couple years after my surgery, I made several embroideries that depicted my interior body during the operation—a new kind of self-portrait. Later, I returned to painting to explore the environments where that healing took place in early months, focusing on mobility aids that suggest the presence of a body to activate them, but without any figures present.

This painting combines these varied approaches self-portraiture: the figure, mobility aids, and the environments where that healing took place are all flattened into a single plane. The foliage that surrounds me in the bathroom are part memory and part dream, suggesting the possibility of new growth.
