About this piece:

The three spines in this piece are anatomical drawings of my X-rays that were taken before my spine surgery to correct and halt the progression of scoliosis, a spine deformity. The two outer spines are depictions of my side-bending X-rays, which were taken to help my surgeons understand the extent of my mobility pre-op. The middle spine is a straight-on view, taken in the weeks before surgery. All around the three spines are house plants rendered in paint and colored pencils. Being surrounded by house plants gave me a sense of peace and connection to the outside world while I was stuck inside and dealing with the pain and isolation that often comes with recovery or ongoing illness. The plants also gave me something to nurture and take care of while I was healing and unable to care for myself.
