About this piece:

This painting is from a series of self-portraits that incorporate the use of an oval-shaped mirror that was passed down to my mother from my grandparents. I have always been interested in the potential of mirrors to represent multiple symbols simultaneously. Mirrors can reflect our environments and physical bodies, but they can also represent other types of reflections, such as reflecting on the past or dreaming about the future. In this way, mirrors can be seen as a type of portal.

In this painting, I’m reclined on a couch and gently holding the mirror at my side. Rather than reflecting my physical body, the oval-shaped surface appears almost transparent, and is sparsely filled with graphite gestures of plants and windows around the room. Its sparseness leaves room for multiple interpretations.
