About this piece:
The reference image I used for this painting came from a series of photos that I took on in the days just before my spine surgery. Knowing the surgery would change my physical body’s structure and alter my mobility permanently, I began recording myself in poses that I knew I would never be able to re-create post-op.
The curvature of my spine created a significant ‘hump’ on my back that was very visible when I bent forward. In this painting, the hue of the shadow on my back almost gives the illusion that my back is split open, which mirrors my emotional state about my upcoming surgery.
