Skin Contention, 2013

Solo Exhibition at Point of Contact Gallery, Syracuse NY. January 31 - February 20, 2013
Excerpt from Exhibition Statement:
Historically, knitting and crochet has been considered a domestic task reserved for women, yet the cloths in the wall installation were not made by me or anyone I know. Most of these quilts were discarded so lack the sentiment of comfort and protection. The fabric used in Crochet, however, was made by my great, great grandmother. Though it appears to be delicate because of its thin, intricate patterns, it is quite strong due to its unified structure, its weight and elasticity. Evidence of this tension is conveyed throughout the installation in contrasting indications of struggle and captivity, fluidity and harmony.

Female anatomy, but more specifically female genitalia, seems to be vastly misunderstood by most people. The mythological idealization of ‘feminine’ and the idyllic female form defined by its own image is advertised to us as the standard of what is acceptable, and what is not. Some of these standards deny natural physiology in ways that would require surgeries and other procedures to attain them. Skin Contention attempts to obliterate the incredibly specific criterion to measure what defines beauty, sexuality, and feminine.
