Monotypes (2022 - Ongoing)
This is a small selection of my monotype prints, which are comprised of acrylic paint on cardstock. While some monotypes are finished after a single layer of paint, others become densely layered with drawings or collage techniques. The imagery in my prints are created with hand-cut stencils that reference natural or domestic environments, and human anatomy. While some of these references to the human body are more expressive or abstract, others are drawn from source imagery of my own X-rays and medical scans to illustrate the medical hardware that has been embedded in my body through surgical interventions to pain over time.
What I enjoy most about monotype printmaking is the ephemeral nature of the process itself. Unlike certain types of printmaking that are designed to produce the same image multiple times, monotype printmaking effectively eliminates the possibility of creating the same print twice. This limitation of the process itself is conceptually very interesting to me, as it echos the limitations of memory and the body. New memories can form and wounds can heal, but they leave us fundamentally changed.
